Another D1/D2 combo-meet saw the distance squad improve a bit. Relay running can oftentimes bring out the important emotional aspect of high school track and field. Rather than just doing it (or not) for you, you’re doing it for the three other guys. With another thinned out squad due to vacations (and a couple of no-shows), we put together the 4×8 and DMR with goals in mind. 4×8 was to get everyone under 2:10 (I seeded them at 8:40.0), the DMR was to stick to your per-lap splits and shoot for an indoor PR (personal record).

4×8 – Lead-off Bryce Miles ran 2:05 last indoors and has yet to come close to that this season. He took it out aggressively and moved into second on the backstretch of the last lap bringing it in with a respectable 2:08.8. Ahmed Shamsi, although not spectacular, has been consistantly around 2:10 so far. He chipped a bit off that with 2:09.2 keeping us in second behind Bensalem. Matt Maiale, probably still a bit tired from his 3000 on Wednesday, took it out a bit too conservatively but moved into the lead, as Bensalem went weak on their third leg. He had too much left at the end (he admitted), his 2:11.5 attested to that. Trying to stay in contention during the early legs, we often go fast-to-slow with the order. Jack Quinn (2:14 indoor PR) found himself with a 20m lead at the final hand-off and it was off to the races. He hung on gamely but was overtaken by Holy Ghost Prep’s anchor on the last lap. A glance at the watch showed 2:11.6, a nice improvement for Jack. Final time: 8:40.76. (not a bad prediction by me, If I say so myself!)

DMR was high lighted by Solomon Thistle’s 3:36 lead-off 1200 to keep us in it, and anchor Caymus Ruffner’s 12 sec PR 1600 of 5:04.2 (helped by miss-counting his laps and ‘kicking’ with 2 to go.)
